To determine if it’s right for you, read our DoD SkillBridge Program FAQs. To apply for SkillBridge, you must meet the following eligibility requirements:
Active Duty Service
You must be an active duty service member in the U.S. Armed Forces who is within 180 days of your separation date.
Command Approval
You must receive command approval from your commanding officer to participate in SkillBridge. This includes approval for the specific training program you wish to participate in.
Career Readiness
You must be deemed "career ready" by your branch of service, which typically involves completing pre-separation counseling and attending transition assistance programs.
Eligibility for Employment
You must be eligible for employment in the civilian workforce. This includes meeting any necessary education, certification, or licensing requirements for your chosen field.

What should I do before I talk to SilverEdge about a SkillBridge Internship?
- To determine if it’s right for you, learn more about the DoD SkillBridge program here.
- Get approval from your chain of command to participate in the DoD SkillBridge Internship program. Your command has the right of refusal based on the needs of the military.
What are SilverEdge's initial criteria for a SkillBridge Internship?
- You are within 2 to 6 months of your end of service obligation to start the planning process.
- You have a proven track record of success in the military with skills, experiences, and learning aptitude that complements SilverEdge’s mission and SkillBridge’s support capabilities. (Top skills include cybersecurity, systems administration/integration/development, intelligence analysis, and engineering management).
- You are in an area where SilverEdge has a large presence (Washington, DC, Fort Meade, Maryland, and Virginia).
What is the earliest I should contact SilverEdge about a DoD SkillBridge Internship?
- Two to 9 months from the end of your service obligation. It takes about 1 to 3 months to coordinate everything.
What is the ideal duration of a DoD SkillBridge Internship?
- Four to 6 months is the ideal duration for an Internship. Durations are customized on the intern end-of-service timeline. Exceptions can be made.
What if my command does not allow me to take time away to pursue a DoD SkillBridge Internship?
- In this case, although not financial ideal, your best option would be to coordinate a regular internship with SilverEdge during your terminal leave period.
Do I get paid by SilverEdge while I am pursuing a DoD SkillBridge Internship?
- No, the DOD/OMB prohibits service members from receiving wages from a SkillBridge Internship provider.
Can I do an internship with a program that serves the military command I come from?
No, this would constitute a conflict of interest.
Does a SkillBridge Internship guarantee me a job offer with SilverEdge?
- No. We enter into a SkillBridge relationship with you with the intent to find a way to make an offer to you, but there are no guarantees. However, the internship gives you a great opportunity to prove yourself.
